Prayer Request
It is with sincere regret that we inform all Rotarians that the wife of our new International President, Ade Majiyagbe suffered a severe stroke and died following the International Convention in Brisbane, Australia. As many of you already know, Dr. Johathan Majiyagbe was introduced as the new International President of Rotary for this next year at the convention in Brisbane which just concluded this past week. He will be the first RI president from the continent of Africa.
We ask that you please keep President-elect Jonathan, his family, and the entire Family of Rotary, in your prayers.

Walt was honored with the Frank Sherman Award by the Southside Rotary on June 10. According to Southside Rotary President Mayo Mills, "West Jacksonville is an incubator for Frank Sherman Award winners." Our very own Bill Gay and Bob Shircliff are previous recipients of the award. Message from President Phil Voss
Fellow Rotarians,

As many of you may already know, our District Executive Secretary, Emmie Funchess has a very aggressive form of cancer in her ankle, and the treatment/cure is very expensive. Unfortunately, Emmie does not have medical insurance, as it is not currently offered as a benefit through our Rotary since she works part time (for Rotary District 6970). Emmie's mom, Mariam Funchess (Executive Secretary of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville) has agreed to the Jacksonville Rotary Club's sponsorship of a fund to help Emmie defray some or all of the expenses she's facing over the next few months.

Our board will consider this matter at our next monthly board meeting, but in the interim if any of you would like to send funds designated for Emmie's treatments, please use the following information.

Mail your donation to Mercantile Bank at 1200 Riverplace Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207 to the account established in the name of "Friends of Emmie Fund."

The FAMILY OF ROTARY is a most important part of everything we stand for in Rotary, and here is a great example of how we can assist others in a time of need. Thanks for your consideration and generosity.

Yours in the Spirit of Rotary,
Phil

Emma's Search for the $100.00 Hamburger
Yesterday, Damon Loop took our exchange student, Emma Roux out to lunch… in St. Augustine… via plane. It was for what is affectionately known in the aviation community as the $100.00 hamburger. On the way back to Jacksonville, Damon handed over the controls to Emma. According to Rob Overly, "I am indeed happy to say that we all survived."

A few photos of the event can be found in the photoalbum.

Welcome to the West Jax Rotary Club

Dominican Republic Water Project
Are you tired of the typical annual winter vacation? Would you like to spend a week in a Caribbean listening to the gentle rhythms of the azure blue surf while the regal Royal Palm trees sway in the cool ocean breezes, contemplating what life must be like back home under the pressures of the work a day world and the biting damp cold of a late February day in northern Florida? Would you like to get away but feel a little guilty that you might be having too much fun while your friends and coworkers try to keep up with the rat race on your behalf? More

Emmie Funchess Update
From District Governor Ken Smallwood:

I'm happy to report to you that Emmie had the tumor removal surgery last Friday, and her mom, Miriam, reports that the doctors are optimistic that Emmie has at least a 90% chance that this surgery will be a total success.

Emmie, Miriam, and the whole Funchess family are truly grateful for the prayers and the generosity from the Rotarians in District 6970!! This is a great organization that answers the call to service whenever needed.

Please report to every member of your Club this most encouraging news, and keep Emmie in all of your prayers. Emmie should be back home late this week and, thank God, this difficult ordeal for her is nearly over. Your continued thoughts will help beyond imagination!

Thank you so much!

Note from President Phil regarding upcoming District Conference
Fellow West Jacksonville Rotarians:

The District Conference webpage is now up and running. Go to www.rotary6970.org/District%20Conference04.htm to get the latest flyer on the Conference, see the list of great prizes for our District Conference Raffle, and Register for the Conference on-line. The BEST PRICE for Conference Registration is available right now. Early registration can save you as much as $100 per couple.

The Rotary Club of West Jacksonville will have our weekly meeting on the Friday of the District Conference at the Adams Mark. More info will follow on this meeting. But suffice it to say that all of our members may attend this luncheon at NO EXTRA COST because we will be using our regular luncheon funds for this opening session.

This year’s District Conference location is designed for Jacksonville Rotarians… and I sincerely encourage you to look over the entire agenda on line at the website above and consider signing up for the whole conference. I already have. You can simply operate from your home if you don’t want to stay overnight at the Adam’s Mark and the prices are not that hefty considering the meals and entertainment planned. If you register for and attend the entire Conference, I will ask the board to consider crediting you with 3 makeups for attendance purposes…one for each day of the conference.

Although the keynote speaker on Friday has not yet confirmed, we have been pretty much assured that it will be someone nationally recognized and politically exciting.

Our club will be displaying and showcasing our Handicapped ball field Community Service Project, our ongoing leadership in community service such as the Blood Drive and Sulzbacher Center, plus our international service projects in the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Argentina. There are some superb raffle items this year and Raffle tickets will be available for sale at each of our regular Wednesday meetings. Rob Wells is our overall coordinator for the District conference and you’ll be hearing more about all the details at every meeting from now through April 30th. PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US AT THE CONFERENCE. The first one in Jacksonville in several years.

Yours in Rotary,
President Phil

River City Cleanup
Rotarians: A reminder that our club will participate in the 2004 River Clean Up project on Saturday, March 20th. We will gather for coffee and donuts/pastries at 8am near the tennis courts at Boone Park in Riverside on Park Avenue. Following breakfast we'll don our rubber gloves and trash bags and head for the tributaries. We should be complete no later than 11am. There will be a signup sheet at the next regular Wednesday meeting on March 17th. If you haven't had the opportunity to help out in one of our community service projects, this will be a great opportunity to jump in on the fun. 3 hours on a Saturday morning ... cleaning up our river ... and you get a "makeup" as well.

Appreciate your continued support to "Lend a Hand"... to our community, our club, and our world.

District golf tournament
A challenge has been laid down!!! WHO IS THE BEST ROTARY GOLF TWO-SOME IN NORTHEAST FLORIDA?????

District Fun and Fellowship Chair Max Zahn and District Conference Golf Tournament Chair Ken Barnett have reserved tee times for one hundred of Rotary's finest golfers at the Deercreek Country Club, here in Jacksoville, THURSDAY AFTERNOON, APRIL 29TH, 2004. This is the day BEFORE the District Conference begins at the Adam's Mark Hotel.

The Golf Tournament Committee will be awarding four (4) trophies to the winners at the Friday night Tailgate Party, and, District 6970 will be presenting the DISTRICT 6970 GOLF CHAMPIONS banner to the overall winning two-some, to take back to their Club and hang on the wall for all visiting Rotarians to see for the coming year. Then, you'll be able to bring it back to the next District 6970 Golf Tournament and present it to the NEXT winning two-some. (Well, you might be presenting it back to yourselves - who knows).

Don't delay - only 100 spots available - and this promises to be a FUN time.

Golf Reminder
To all fellow West Jax Rotarians:

This is a reminder that Monday, March 8th is our annual Charity Golf Tournament at Bent Creek Golf Course on 103rd Street. Registration and putting contest begins at 11am and lunch is at 11:30.

For those “non-Golfers” who are coming to lunch, which is our regular weekly meeting, will be served beginning at 11:30. We will have a VERY short program, which consist of the Pledge, Invocation, and a welcome to the golfers. That’s it. Golfers will report to the carts at 12:45 followed by a Shotgun start at 1pm. For those who would like to come back out for a “cold one” and the awards ceremony, please return at 5:00pm.

Look forward to seeing you at Bent Creek on Monday. And we very much appreciate the support we have received from the entire club in this most worthwhile fundraising effort. We will assist 6 young high school seniors with college tuition. This is the truth. It is fair to all concerned, builds wonderful goodwill and friendships in our community, and is obviously beneficial to all concerned…..(since 6 kids get tuition assistance and you get to hit the little while ball around on a workday). Thanks!

Yours in Rotary
Phil Voss, President

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is a conference for high school leaders that value learning more about ethical leadership. A brief summary of the RYLA program and an application for interested rising high school juniors and seniors may be downloaded using the link below. Our club will sponsor 3 students. If you know of anyone that meets the requirements and might be interested in this program, please have them fill out an application and return it to David Barksdale by March 19th. Remember, relatives of Rotarians are eligible for this very worthwhile leadership conference.

District Assembly Update
As Cecil Gibson clarified in Wednesday's meeting, the District Assembly is scheduled to begin at 8:00 A.M. (not 8:30 A.M.) on Saturday, March 13, at St. John's River Community College in Palatka.

As Jerry MacKoul mentioned, this is Ken Baker's first big event in the District as District Governor-Elect. Accordingly, we would like to get a big turnout from our Club to show our support for Ken.

Another good reason to attend, is that this is a good way to learn more about Rotary and to get more information that will help us meet our goals for this year and next year. For this reason, all current board members and board members for next year should plan to attend. Committee chairs for next year should also try to attend, especially chairs of the following committees: International Relations, Youth Awards, Foundation, International Youth, and Interact. Finally, new members should make a special effort to attend. Once again, the Club will pay the full registration fee, which includes a great BBQ lunch.

For those who are interested, we plan to carpool from the Orange Park Holiday Inn. We will be meeting there at 7:00 A.M. If you plan to drive on your own, here are the directions:

Take Roosevelt all the way to Palatka.
Turn right on 19.
On 19, go to the third red light which is St. Johns and turn right.
The College is at the intersection of Moody and St. John (1st red light).

Please let Mike Prendergast know if anyone has any questions.

District Assembly is coming up
The Rotary District 6970 Assembly will be at St. John's River Community College in Palatka on Saturday, March 13 from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm. While there is no pre-registration, we would like to get a headcount if possible. Please respond to President-Elect Mike Prendergast by e-mail to let him know if you can attend. If possible, all of next year's officers and directors should try to attend. Committee chairs, especially Foundation, Interact, World Community Service, Youth Exchange, Interact, and International Youth should also try to attend. This is also a good opportunity for new members or, for that matter, all members to learn more about Rotary as we head into our 2004-2005 year.

This counts as a make-up and the Club will pay the full $30 registration fee for any member who attends.

2004 District Conference
Greetings to all West Jax Rotarians!!

In just 3 weeks we will hold our 2004 District Conference. Due to an unusual number of EARLY registrations, we have extended the "early registration discount" prices until the last week in April. So far, over 275 folks have registered and more Rotarians are signing up every day. The planning committee has announced that Wayne Weaver, CEO of the Jacksonville Jaguars, will be our Friday keynote speaker. This, of course, fits the "All Stars Sports" theme and we are delighted that he has agreed to join us. He will talk about "Lending a Hand" as well as the upcoming Jaguar season and the 2005 Super Bowl. He will also tell us about a special offer the Jaguars will be making to our Rotary District which will help raise funds for our Rotary Foundation. Of course Friday night will be our Alltel Terrace Suites "tailgate party" and Saturday night we will enjoy a gourmet dinner and be entertained by the Smothers Brothers. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN IN ON THE FUN!!

All West Jax Rotarians are especially asked to consider attending both the Friday luncheon which will be our regular club meeting (no extra financial charge for that) and MOST IMPORTANTLY, asked to consider signing up for the Saturday events which includes breakfast, seminars, the house of friendship where our community and world service projects will be highlighted and finally the Kentucky Derby viewing and party followed by the banquet, the Smother’s Brothers and dancing. This will be our own Ken Baker’s inauguration as District Governor.

To date, 40 of our 56 clubs will be represented at the conference. We are one of them, but we only have 6 signed up so far from West Jax. Two clubs have over 25 Rotarians registered! Don't miss it! Let’s be there for our own Ken Baker as he starts his year as District Governor. You can register on line at the district web site: www.rotary6970.org.

Thanks for your consideration. Phil

RI Chicago Centennial Convention
The Rotary Club of West Jacksonville has reserved a block of 20 rooms at the Chicago Marriott for the RI International Convention. So far, nine rooms have been reserved. We have until April of next year to collect deposits, which will be $175 per room. The room rate is $210 plus applicable taxes. We have our block reserved from 6/17 through 6/22, although attendees do not need to reserve rooms for all six nights.

If anyone is interested in attending the convention, please let President Mike know and he will put you down for a room. If we get enough interest early on, we will try to reserve another block of rooms.

This is a great opportunity for all Rotarians to attend an international convention and a rare opportunity for West Jax "road trip". Please try to attend if you can.

Rotary Youth Exchange Welcome Home Dinner
The Rotary Youth Exchange Welcome Home Dinner is a dinner for the 9 outbound exchange students that we sent out last year. We sent them to the following countries: France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Thailand, Austria, and Brazil.

You can read their individual journals by clicking on their photos at: http://www.ryeflorida.org/outbounds.htm

Each of the students will get up and make a brief presentation on the country that they stayed in and will talk about their experiences as an exchange student. We will also have our next class of 20 outbound students who will be going to the same countries plus Denmark, Slovakia, Poland, Taiwan, Argentina, Russia, and Norway.

This is a great way for Rotarians to become familiar with one of the better programs we have that builds good relations within the international community, and it is inspiring to see the level of maturity and self confidence that the students have attained as a result of the program.

Date: July 14, 2004
Time: 6:30 pm
Place: Ravines State Park, Palatka

Rotary Foundation update
Below are directions to the District 6970 Rotary Foundation Seminar at the Ravines Garden State Park on Saturday, August 21. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. and the event runs until 3:00 p.m. A BBQ lunch is included and the Club will cover the $20 registration cost of any member who attends. This counts as a floating make-up for anyone needing a make-up.

All Board Members and Foundation Committee members are asked to attend, if possible, and all other members (especially new members) are encouraged to attend. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Foundation and how Rotary International and the District use our Paul Harris dollars for Rotary service worldwide. This is also a great opportunity to show our support for our own Ken Baker in his first District-wide function as District Governor.

We need to get a head count. Accordingly, if you have not previously let President Mike know or signed up at the last meeting, please let President Mike and Fran know if you can attend.

For those interested in carpooling to the District Foundation Seminar on Saturday, we will meet in the Parking lot of the Orange Park Holiday Inn at 7:00 a.m. That should give us enough time to get to the Ravines on time for the 8:00 registration.

Win tickets to the big game that uses Roman Numerals
The Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach is having a fund raiser that should be of interest to the club. As part of their annual Oktoberfest celebration, they are raffling off a pair of tickets to this year’s SB (NFL regulations ban them from using the words "Super" and "Bowl" in their advertising). Since the game is in our backyard, they thought some of our members might be interested in buying a few chances. In addition to the pair of tickets, the winner will receive 4-nights lodging for two in a Jacksonville hotel and $1,000.00 for travel expenses.

The drawing will be held on October 16th, and the winner need not be present. Tickets are $5.00 each and last year they sold approximately 4,400 tickets. The Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach intends to use the majority of the proceeds to construct a gazebo in their local park to commemorate Rotary’s Centennial celebration. A portion will be used to assist victims of Hurricane Charley.

As an additional incentive for our club, they will allow us to retain $1.00 from each ticket we sell. Please contact Jim Register to purchase your chance to win and support this terrific fundraiser.

Welcome to the West Jax Rotary Club

Jaguar auction to benefit Rotary District 6970
ATTENTION ALL DISTRICT 6970 ROTARIANS!

As you know, the Jacksonville Jaguars designated the Chicago Bears NFL game on December 12, 2004 as the Rotary Centennial Game in honor of our Centennial Celebration. In support of our Rotary Foundation, Wayne Weaver, the CEO of the Jaguars, agreed to donate $5.00 to the Foundation for each ticket sold through this promotion. We anticipated that we would sell approximately 300 tickets. We have now sold almost 1100 tickets! Congratulations and "thank you" to all Rotarians who have supported this event! As a result of our success, we have received a number of promotional items. These include four Touchdown Club Seats to the Houston Texans game on December 26th, four regular tickets to this game, an official NFL Fred Taylor autographed football, and four pre-game on field passes. So, who gets these awards? Since one of our main objectives was to raise funds for our Rotary Foundation and in order to give every Rotarian an opportunity to receive one of these prizes, we are going to hold a district-wide auction. To participate in the auction, simply go to Rotary6970.org and select Centennial Football Game starting December 1 through December 7th. Follow the cues to the auction site.

You may bid on any or all of the four following prizes:

1. Two Touchdown Club Tickets for the Houston Texans game on December 26, 2004.
2. Two More Touchdown Club Tickets for the Houston Texans game on December 26, 2004.
3. Four regular seat tickets for the Houston Texans game on December 26, 2004.
4. An official NFL football signed by Fred Taylor.

The winner of any of the four above prizes will also receive one pre-game on field pass.

The auction will start on December 1, 2004 and end promptly at 5:00 P.M. on December 7, 2004. The high bid and the name of the person making the bid will appear on the website for each of the four items. The website will also have a countdown clock to indicate when the bidding will end. The highest bidder for each item will be declared the winner at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 7, 2004. The four high bidders will be invited to join Wayne Weaver on the field to participate in the Jacksonville Jaguars - Chicago Bears pre-game ceremonies. The money collected for the auction will go to our Rotary Foundation.

Are you thinking of becoming a Centennial Paul Harris Fellow? How close are you to becoming a Major Donor to the Foundation? Do you want to be a member of the Paul Harris Society? Have you thought about making another contribution to Polio Plus? If you are the high bidder on any of the items in this auction, your donation will also count toward achieving any of your personal Foundation giving goals.

Our district has exceeded all expectations in supporting this Rotary NFL Centennial Celebration Football game. More that 1000 Rotarians will be in the stands and it promises to be a exciting, fun-filled day. What a great way to celebrate 100 years of Rotary!

Your support of this event and of the auction to raise funds for our Foundation is greatly appreciated!

Ken Baker

Message from President Mike
And a Good Time was Had by All!

Special thanks to John McCorvey, Vincent McCormack and Frank Scheu for an outstanding Christmas Party on December 15 at the Florida Yacht Club. The food was great, the "refreshments" kept flowing, and the fellowship was even better. The staff at the Yacht Club (under the direction of FYC Commodore and West Jacksonville Rotarian Frank Scheu) did a fantastic job.

Thanks also to Dale Crisp, who challenged us to step up our efforts on Toys for Tots and to all of our members who rose to accept Dale's challenge. The presents outgrew even Dale's expectations, filling up two Christmas trees at FYC and requiring the Marines to call in special reinforcements to haul the gifts away.

Please remember that there will be no regular meeting on December 22 or 29.
Our next regular meeting will be Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at the Holiday Inn.

Please remember to keep Bill and Olive Mahoney in your prayers and try to send a card if you get a chance. Bill's address is:
4132 Robin Hood Road
Jacksonville, FL, 32210

See you next year!

Now, as they return home to District 6970, it's time to celebrate their accomplishments and hear their stories, at our second annual Welcome Home Dinner.

Tickets are now on sale for this wonderful event, which will feature 4-minute speeches by each member of the 2004-05 outbound class. How does one sum up a year in 4 minutes? You have to be there to find out. It's a great evening, with stories that are funny, inspiring, amazing, and touching, all at the same time. Anyone interested in Youth Exchange (or in young people generally) is encouraged to come.

The dinner will be held on Thursday evening, July 21, beginning at 6:30 PM, in the Campbell Civic Center at Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka. The event is catered by the Rotary Foundation Fryers, the Gainesville-based charity barbecue crew, so you know the food will be terrific, as will the program. Tickets are $15 per person in advance, $20 at the door. To order your tickets, send a check, payable to "Rotary D6970 Youth Exchange", to Rotary Youth Exchange, Al Kalter - Chairman, 141 Elmwood Dr., Jacksonville, FL 32259. For more information, e-mail rotary@kaltermail.com.

Yet another way to make-up a missed meeting
Rotary eClub One exists to serve Rotarians with special needs, including those who cannot maintain attendance at regular club meetings because of extensive business commitments, travel, health problems, or geographical isolation from existing clubs. The club, Rotary eClub One, was chartered in January 2002 as a part of the New Models for Rotary Clubs Pilot Project. What makes this valuable to you is that as one of their International Service Projects, they have developed a make-up component which allows Rotarians from any where in the world to log on, read one of five informational programs linked to the site and complete a make-up form. To date, over 8000 Rotarians have made up regular meetings by visiting the site and completing the required reading. With this make-up option available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no one has a reason for not maintaining the required attendance.

The event will occur on Thursday, April 6, 2005. It will be held at the W W Sporting Clays on Otis Road (west end of Jacksonville).
