There will be no meeting this week, 2/17/10, at the Holiday Inn since the meeting has been moved to the Downtown Library.

The parking garage is located on Duval Street between Main Street and Laura Street. Duval is one-way going west, so one needs to cross Main Street heading west and the entrance is on the right. It is right across Duval Street north of the Library.

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm.

Notes
Drew Story announced the WestJax will join with the City of Jacksonville for the 2010 Jacksonville-St. Johns Celebration and River Clean Up. Members with a canoe, kayak, johnboat or other personal water craft to meet at Lamb’s Yacht Center on March 20th at 8:00a.m Please notify Drew if you are planning to participate.

Preston Keyes updated the contributions for Haiti relief contributions from WestJax Members. The total now stands at $3,636.71 from members and a club contribution of $500.00 for a total of $4,136.71.

Phil Voss spoke on the value of supporting the Youth Exchange Program and introduced his daughter Lucy who was a past participant and advocate of the Program. Lucy spoke briefly of her positive experiences gained by participating in the Youth Exchange Program.

Marty Sack updated the members on the family of Rotary and also gave the members tips on enhancing their relationship with their spouses.

Phil Voss introduced one new honorary member and one new member to the club.

Captain Joe Baker, USCC was introduced as our newest Honorary Member.

Eric Sherman was also introduced as a new member to the Club.

Bill Scheu introduced Tom Majdanics, Founding Executive Director of KIPP Jacksonville Schools, as our guest speaker. Tom’s presentation focused on the opening of the first KIPP School in Jacksonville, This will also be the first KIPP School in Florida.

KIPP, the Knowledge is Power Program, in a national network of free, open-enrollment, public charter schools with a track record of preparing students from under achieving, low-income neighborhoods with a academic and character skills needed for success in college and life.

The first of five KIPP schools in the Jacksonville area will open in August of 2010. The school will be a middle school and will be located in Northwest Jacksonville. Tom also presented a video presentation on the KIPP schools and their successes.
