Notes
President John called the special Veterans Day meeting to order.
Bill Howey reported on our December 13th Jacksonville Jaguar game. Tickets are still available for $60.00
John Bickerstaff reminded the membership that a Blood Drive was currently taking place.
Joe Springer encouraged the members to sign up for the Salvation Army “bell ringing” on December 5th, reminding us that we have several different shifts
Bill Hollyfield gave a report on the very successful Dictionary Project and drew our attention to the dictionaries he had previously placed on the tables. He let us know that the Project was well received in the schools - he remarked on the excited teachers and seeing the faces of the children light up (especially on being told that they could keep their pens!).
The Rotoract Club is having a Clean Up Day in Riverside Park on November 14th and the membership was encouraged to participate.
President John reminded the membership that the District Conference will take place December 11th through 13th. President John also discussed several important dates in December, including the Christmas Party at Florida Yacht Club on December 15th.
Marty Sack gave his Family of Rotary report and announced several birthdays and no ages. He informed us that Mark Hulsey has announced his candidacy for Circuit Court Judge. Marty also reported that Hamilton Cooke participated in the Jacksonville Bar Association Follies, singing “Old Man River”.
A new member, Bud Para was inducted after being introduced by Bob Goodwin. Bud is involved with governmental affairs at JEA.
Our Sergeant-at-Arms, Nina Sasser introduced our guests, visiting Rotarians and a very special group of Interact members from Bishop Snyder High School.
Phil Voss introduced our speaker, Eric Sherman, who is a state liaison in the office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, a position he assumed after serving twenty-one years in the Navy. Our speaker began his speech by acknowledging that it was …”an honor to speak on one of the most celebrated days of the year”.
Recognizing Jacksonville’s strong military presence over many years, Eric wanted to make a difference in the lives of the military personnel and their families. He became involved with the Quality of Life Improvement Initiative. This project was designed to address the special needs of military families and to enable the State of Florida to assist in meeting those needs. After describing various ways in which the State of Florida has been of assistance to military families, Eric expressed his personal pride in the way Florida has accepted the challenge of meeting those needs.
Eric concluded his Veterans Day remarks by reminding us that “there is no greater freedom than ours; no greater pride than those who serve”.
