West Word for 9/9/2009

Kirby Green
Executive Director St. Johns River Water Management District

Kirby B. Green III has been the Executive Director of the St. Johns River Water Management District since July 11, 2001. He oversees the daily operation of some 700 employees who service an area of 18 counties in northeast and east-central Florida. The agency is responsible for regulating water use and protecting wetlands, waterways and drinking water supplies. Prior to his appointment with the District, Green was the deputy secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, served as director of the Florida Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Beaches and Shore, and held leadership positions in DNR’s Division of State Lands and Bureau of Survey and Mapping.

Notes
Bill Howie surprised everyone by letting the club know that Jag Tickets are still available. Prices have been lowered.

Tommy Grimes gave a special award to Clint Dawkins for Clint’s phenomenal leadership with the fund-raising in the Rotary Foundation. Clint received a really nice bust of Paul Harris. Tommy Grimes claimed that it was made by a really famous artist, but he couldn’t remember the artist’s name. Clint seemed somewhat surprised to be awarded the bust, but did take the award and the microphone to let the membership and Preston Keyes know that our Westside group needs to do more and we shouldn’t be too proud. He said something about the Bequest Foundation.

Marty Sack announced the birthdays and noted Homer Dunmon was celebrating his 92nd birthday. Also, Diane and Jody Ballard are the proud grandparents of a grandson born last month.

Several members received perfect attendance awards.

Dan Hicken was the speaker and started off by questioning why the members who received perfect attendance were not in attendance.

Dan’s talk was about Football and boy did he ramble on. His first topic was Florida Football. Dan stated that the Florida Gators have never had a perfect season in their 103 years of fielding a team. He believes that 2009 could be the year, but it will be tough and one game will be a real cliffhanger.

FSU is in transition with no real star players. Jimbo Fisher will run the show and Christian Ponder will be an influential player. Miami has a tough schedule. Bill Gay asked about JU and Dan said Kerwin Bell has done a great job. Dan was concerned that Kerwin will eventually lose interest and may want to head out to the big leagues.
