Officer Kelley W. Burroughs
Ofc. Burroughs was named Police Officer of the Month for the month of March for his outstanding work in the Apartment Task Force. The Apartment Task Force is a squad of officers who concentrate on crime committed at apartment complexes. Some of these complexes have over a thousand units and many are hotbeds of criminal activity. The officers in the Task Force are often undercover and involved in surveillance operations.
During the past year, Ofc. Burroughs and his squad have been instrumental in achieving the following results.
- Over 200 felony and misdemeanor arrests;
- 40 vehicle seizures;
- 14 gun seizures; and
- Substantial cocaine and marijuana seizures.
In addition, in July of last year, Ofc. Burroughs was primarily responsible for the surveillance, takedown and arrest of an armed carjacking suspect. The predator had just taken a car from a young woman by gun point.
Further, last summer Ofc. Burroughs was directly responsible for the discovery of a methamphetamine lab, resulting in five arrests and the seizures of a shotgun, ammunition, two cars and other illegal drugs. This criminal had eluded JSO and federal DEA agents for a long time by frequently moving around the City and State.
Also during last summer, Ofc. Burroughs teamed up with federal agents investigating an economic crimes suspect involved in counterfeiting and identification theft with economic losses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ofc. Burroughs dedicated a large amount of his personal time in investigating this case, so much so that one of the federal agents inquired as to whether Ofc. Burroughs actually rested or slept.
In yet another instance, Ofc. Burroughs arrested a juvenile who organized a party involving hundreds of other juveniles taking part in under-age drinking. Ofc. Burroughs continued to follow through on this case, working with the State Attorney and the parents of the juvenile, with the result being that the juvenile is now considering law enforcement as a career.
There are many other examples of Ofc. Burroughs' outstanding work, all of which demonstrate his excellent character and dedication to the Sherriff's Office and community.
Accordingly, because of his many outstanding efforts, and for his excellent service to our community, we are proud to honor Ofc. Burroughs as Police Office of the Month.
