Officer of the Month -- July 2005

Officer Steve W. Cornellier
Officer Cornellier is with the Mounted Unit of the JSO (horseback) and is the head trainer for that unit. He was nominated for Police Officer of the Month for his efforts in making the SuperBowl a success. In March of 2004, he assisted in writing the first draft of the SuperBowl action plan for the Mounted Unit. At the same time, he contacted other police agencies to seek their assistance for the SuperBowl, and was able to secure the help of the Orlando PD, the Tampa PD, the Pasco County SO, the Orange County SO and the Hillsborough County SO.

Officer Cornellier implemented the training plan so that all police agencies could work together as one unit during the SuperBowl, and he was the lead instructor for the training sessions. The training sessions began in November, and included training on an obstacle course designed by Officer Cornellier to simulate actual obstacles that the horses would encounter during SuperBowl week. During SuperBowl week, Officer Cornellier, who is also farrier, worked on several horses from other departments when they had hoof problems, and was able to get these horses back into service quickly.

During the training sessions and during SuperBowl week, Officer Cornellier was always the first to show up and the last to leave, which demonstrates the kind of dedication he has to the Sheriff's Office and his unit. Officer Cornellier exemplifies what a true law enforcement professional is by his dedication to his unit and the Sheriff's Office. His hard work helped make the SuperBowl a tremendous success. For his outstanding efforts, leading up to and including the SuperBowl, we are proud to recognize Officer Cornellier as Police Officer of the Month.
